My “High Speed” Day

Today was the first time that I officially sewed with a high-speed sewing machine! I was ecstatic!! For the first couple of seconds, I felt really COOL! (Like one of the designers in Project Runway) :D

The portable sewing machines that all of us (students) carry around are the regular speed sewing machines. The high speed ones are the ones you see in the garment industry (and in Project Runway, if you’ve been noticing).

As there are plenty of high-speed machines, and only two of the regular ones in our class, we usually carry our own portable sewing machines. Unfortunately for me, compared to those of my cohorts’, mine is really heavy (about 16 pounds with the case)..and I really do not fancy carrying it around from the basement parking to my class in the 4th floor by stairs.

Although my cohorts were very lovely, and they offered to share their machines with me, I didn’t feel good about being a free-rider & using their machines. I mean: if I choose to avoid the hassle of carrying my own machine, then I should bear my own consequences & not be on their ways.

With only 2 regular machines available (one of them being broken), there was quite a long queue for the only operating regular machine. It was then that our instructor said: “Why don’t you try the high-speed machines?”

So I did. It was a bit overwhelming at the beginning, the machine felt a lot heavier, and obviously A LOT FASTER!! It was almost crazy! But after several minutes, my foot and I began to get a hold of it. I felt great!!

For factory professional sewers, sewing with a high-speed machine must be like eating a slice of cheesecake (it’s THAT easy). But really, for me, I’m happy because it’s quite an achievement for someone like me (who had newer sewn in my entire life). Where I used to have all my sewing needs done for me, here I’m learning my first hand-stitching, then sewing with regular machine, and now the high-speed one.

I never thought I would say this, but I think there really is something special & soothing about sewing! hahaha. Perhaps just like caviar, it is an acquired taste! :) You should give it a try sometime!
