2009 hairstyle: playin’ to the extreme

New Year. New hairstyle. Both require New Year’s resolutions on anyone’s list. But first of all and most importantlyyour time in getting the right hairstyle for you as a new hairstyle might change your life- totally.
For 2009, hairstylists recommend that women choose between long and short hairstyles and combine color to the cut to bring out each person’s characteristics and personality.
Veteran hairstylist Rudy Hadisuwarno said he had four principle hairstyles for this year. The styles — dubbed as Zenergetics — pair the concepts of natural elements such as fire, water, earth and air, with an energetic hair cut.
Natural zen, Rudy said takes its inspiration from the element of air. It has a floating and airy look, with layers giving texture to the haircut. “Natural zen is best applied to straight hair. The hair color should be brown with a blueish ash tone.”
The second style, passionate zen, is inspired by water. Best applied to curly hair, passionate zen reveals curls and wavy locks by applying a matte or wet look, with a greenish hue of brown as its color.
Inspired by fire, the third hair style — or modern zen — has a short, geometric cut that can be combed straight or spiky. Its color is brown with streaks of red.
For working urbanites, urban zen might be the right choice with its more elegant look. The hair is pulled back into a small bun or is straight hair with manageable curls. Inspired by earth, the color for the urban zen is brown with gold highlights.
Hairstylist Johnny Andrean has also prepared two kinds of hairstyles for this year: The long, layered cut and the bob, concave cut, with red as the basic hair color.
Senior public relations and promotion manager for Johnny Andrean Gita Herdi Hastarani said that both cuts could be combined with Redromantic, the 2009 color choice.are three types of red in Redromantic: Classy romance, red with brown tone; passionate romance, red with purple tone; and blushing romance, red with mahogany tone,” Gita said, adding that the hairstylists would suggest the colors for the clients.
Hairstylist Gusnaldi also said that this year, women would have two extreme hair style choices: A long, layered hairstyle and the super-short cut or pixie crop.
The long, layered look, he explained, would be similar to the cut sported by supermodels Heidi Klum and Cindy Crawford, while the short, he said, would be similar to the look of singer Victoria Beckham and Rihanna. Despite the short hairstyle, he added, women could still get the feminine look and texture by leaving long fringes on the front or on the side. shape will not be the sole factor determining a women’s hairstyle, as self-confidence also enters the picture. There is no push for women to follow a hair trend, but it will surely give them a more fashionable look,” he said.
As for the hair coloring, Gusnaldi recommends darker shades, such as dark red and dark brown. For Indonesians, blonde is out. Hair color will be darker, like our natural hair color”.
Hairstylist Andiyanto said that 2009 would see a trend for a separate, discontinued cut. For example, he added, the back side would be layered, while the front and ear side would take a hat-shaped cut with the bob as its basic inspiration. The style gets its inspiration from the 1970s with modifications and combinations, he said.
Andiyanto believes the 2009 trend will be more blocked color, with different tones between the front cut and the back layer.will be the color of the year, while extreme tones will be used to differentiate the front cut from the back layer,” he said.
Image consultant Ivana Atmojo said Indonesia would see more radical hairstyles in 2009. She predicts that for short hair, in vogue would be the boldly cropped bob, a fringed bob and a pixie crop. For medium hair, Indonesia will still see plenty of last year’s bobs, with a bit of frizz or bed-hair, or a 1940s-inspired wave for a longer bob.
“I think there will also be more people wearing their hair long. The two winning styles for long hair will be: Sexy wavy curls inspired by the 1940s, with hair parted at the side, and a freely flowing bohemian look, styled rather unruly around the shoulders with natural ends,” she said.
While straight and sleek long hair never quite goes out of style, Ivana believes that everyone should feel free to experiment with different accessories. Besides hairstyles, she expects to see people trying bold hair accessories, influenced mainly from the 1940s: Hair bands or “simple feather fasteners”.
However, she added, in picking a hairstyle, women should consider factors such as face shape, age, lifestyle, personality, hair texture, volume and desired styling time. In general, she said, the style and color that women chose should be appropriate for their age, position and profession. It is also good to pick a hairstyle that enhances one’s overall appearance, Ivana said.
“If you are a professional or a businesswoman, you want a look that is more tailored and businesslike. If you are an advertising executive, fashion stylist or entertainer, you may want to go with a more bold and dramatic style that makes a statement,” she said.
With infinite choices to choose from, Ivana said she would want to make sure the overall look would be the one expected to project from and for the woman.
“Finally, whatever hairstyle that you choose, your hair needs to always be clean and well-styled. And if your hair is colored, you need to re-tint the roots every three weeks,” she said.
