Ayat Ayat Cinta

We’ve finally watched “Ayat Ayat Cinta”, a local movie that has been the buzz for practically months now. Melanie Putria (one of the main characters) is Ivonne’s vocal student, who’s a dear friend of ours. So we went to watch the movie, not really because of the rave reviews, but rather, to support the work of our lovely Imel (Melanie).

Despite the fact that my perspectives & life philosophies are alarmingly different from those in the movie (particularly on gender equality & women’s rights), I must admit that this one is the best Indonesian movie I’ve seen so far. I can see how much effort is being poured into the cinematography, the storyline, as well as the acting.

I was very impressed with Rianti Cartwright’s act. She wore a veil for the majority part of the movie, yet she’s able to convey such strong emotion through her eyes. I must say that hers were one of the most beautiful pairs of eyes I’ve yet seen. And of course Melanie Putria did her A-class work very well too. She looked divine, and everything she did (every word she muttered, every glance she gave), she did very naturally in front of the camera. How we wish we could see more of her in the movie :)

The movie is also loaded with Muslim religious teachings, and it’s nice to be able to learn more about other people’s religion. Some of the dialogues were in Arabic, and they really reminded me of my Arabic-language teacher (when she taught me to read Qur’an). Overall, this movie exceeded my earlier expectation. And if you’re curious, well, the movie is still playing in cinemas :)

PS: Although I really wish that the make-up had been done more carefully, to better accentuate the beauty of the actors & actresses, especially when they’re being zoomed in a lot. If you ask me what I would do differently: do more contour shading & highlighting; pay closer attention to the artificial eyelashes (make sure they’re glued properly & not stick out in a scene); lose the mascara clumps; blend better (to avoid looking patchy), & mist-spray when the make-up starts to look chalky on the actress. Hahaha, but it’s just me, though. I do not mean to judge. This is my field, and my natural instinct is to observe the make-up within the first few seconds of every scene :)
