Some Persimmons, Anyone?

Most of the time, it is our chauffeur who does our grocery shopping. But, whenever I have time, I love to do my own grocery shopping. I realise that it’s the closest activity we can get that resembles the pre-historic notion of hunting and gathering our own food from the nature. Our ancient male ancestors used to hunt down animals in the wild nature, while their female counterparts picked their fruits & veggies directly from the trees in the jungles. Now the modern-day people, like us, choose our own food from a vast array of selections in supermarkets’ aisles. The setting today is, indisputably, alarmingly different. There’s no jungle as such, where one type of food grew miles away from the others. Everything is within our reach, only few steps away, so to speak. Add air conditioning, dew spritz installation, shopping carts, cash register lines, sound system, security alarm, & automated doors into the picture—that’s pretty much how practical, or rather, how complicated ( depends on where you see it from) we gather our food today.

Nevertheless, I do see grocery shopping as a fun experience. Silly as it may sound, but I do enjoy the process of choosing my own food from the varieties of the natural produce. I love to touch & feel my lemons, my tomatoes, my leeks, my radishes, my avocadoes, and everything else. It makes me feel alive! :)

Yesterday when we did our grocery shopping, I saw an enormous stack of persimmons! My eyes just gloated with delight! I love love love persimmons (or sharon fruit as we have it in the UK, or ‘kesemek’ in Indonesia). If I were to be left with only one type of food for the rest of my life, I’d choose persimmons. That’s how much I like them!. Naturally, I bought a lot of them, like A LOT.

So what’s really special about persimmons? Well, I personally think that they taste both sophisticated and humble. Depending on the origin and the type, some of them may be intensely sweet, yet crunchy and soft and mildly juicy at the same time. If you buy the non-astringent type, you can even eat them before they’re ripe!

Research done on rats has proven that persimmons lower LDL (the bad-fat) in their bodies. Well, we are no rats..but I believe it must at least have good effects on us too. So, next time you see this fruit, don’t hesitate buying them. Maybe you’ll like them as much as I do! Besides, who could resist their cute & chubby look?
